About - Welcoming
in a new era
Smallman and Son Ltd is
moving onward and upward in 2010. The Leicester-based
construction company is taking its promise of
outstanding quality and professionalism into a new era
with the rebranding of its image to reflect a new
dynamic modern vision.
Mick Vesty, Business
Development Manager, explains the “purpose was partly
due to new ownership but we wanted to reflect a more
modern culture whilst emphasising the family-based
nature of the business and the inherent team ethic. We
wanted to give the company a bit of a lift and also
highlight the forward-thinking nature of the company
and the fact we are now taking on work nationwide.”
Recently, Smallman and Son
has grown in stature and in size. With the new 10,000
sq ft premises with attached joinery shop the company
has improved the manufacturing of joinery which aids
the efficiency of its shop fitting. This means the
company has enhanced control of production explains Mr
Vesty.
Smallman and Son Ltd
provide a range of services for commercial,
residential, and public sector works including
restoration and refurbishment, new build, and
conversions, assisted ably by its professional joinery
and shop fitting division. The company has seen an
influx of refurbishment projects come onto its books
over the last year. Crucially, Smallman and Son has
become integral to public sector works, taking on
challenging and often sensitive projects with the
Ministry of Justice for their prison network and the
National Health Service.
“The prison work
especially is an area of speciality,” explains Mr
Vesty of the unique challenges facing the team onsite.
“A lot of the prison work is quite challenging due to
the nature of the prison service.
“There are instances in
prisons when they get locked down which means your
guys get locked down too. So you do have downtime.
People don’t have the same freedom to move around and
communicate. For example, normally on site your
Contracts Manager or your Site Supervisor would be
available either directly or over the phone every
minute of every day, but when working with the prison
service that’s not possible. So to ensure a project
runs smoothly you have to be very good at forward
planning, scheduling and very organised.”
Smallman and Son also has
to ensure the workforce is heavily vetted when working
on major public sector works with the Prison Service,
National Health Service and in live educational
environments, to avoid security issues. The strict
code of conduct inherent in the Smallman and Son team
ethic is paramount to the company’s continued
relationship with all public and private sector
clients. Additionally, with accreditations with CHAS
and Safe Contractor, and membership of the Federation
of Master Builders, to name a few, the company can be
relied upon to not only provide a level of service of
the highest quality but to also carry out that service
safely.
“We believe that by
operating a very tight team with the right skill sets,
makes us stand out from our competitor set. From the
Managing Director to the staff on site, everyone is
very hands on, everyone is very approachable,” says Mr
Vesty. He also highlights the ability of the team to
work on sensitive projects and the company’s ability
to adapt to unpredictable working conditions.
“We have the ability to
see and overcome issues efficiently. Above all else we
pride ourselves on quality, value and service and that
not only brings new business but repeat business.”
